About the League

The Bowen Island Slo-Pitch league was established in 2016 as a fun adults only league.  It began with 4 teams and quickly grew to 5 teams in 2018 and 6 teams in 2019.

We are a recently established registered member-funded society and our Constitution, Bylaws, and Policies are available below.

Bowen Island Slo Pitch League

Constitution

  1. The name of the society is “Bowen Island Slo Pitch Society”.
  2. The purpose of the League shall be to:
  • offer organized and structured league competition in Slo Pitch on Bowen Island;
  • promote, govern, improve and develop the game of Slo Pitch, in a responsible and organized environment for personal enjoyment and recreation of its participants; and
  • promote and sponsor games and other social events and functions.

This society is a member-funded society. It is funded primarily by its members to carry on activities for the benefit of its members. On its liquidation or dissolution, this society may distribute its money and other property to its members.

Conduct of Members

Bowen Island Slo Pitch League is committed to providing an environment in which all Members are treated fairly and with respect.

Players, coaches and fans of teams who are a member of Bowen Island Slo-pitch League shall be considered members of Bowen Island Slo Pitch League and agree through the terms of membership to abide by the Code of Conduct for said Members outlined below.

No team member, tournament participant, umpire or fan shall:

  • Demonstrate behavior contrary to this Code both on and off the field.
  • Cause any form of personal abuse, including verbal, physical and emotional abuse, towards other athletes, officials, host personnel, spectators and others.
  • Refuse to abide by an official’s decision, threaten an official, or at any time lay a hand upon, push, shove, strike, or make incidental physical contact with the body or kick dirt or other matter on the official or attempt to cause physical contact when disputing a decision. This includes causing or attempting to cause physical contact with another participant at the tournament.
  • Make any disparaging remarks or actions towards other athletes, officials, tournament personnel, Bowen Island Slo-pitch League, spectators and others.
  • Neither reacts in a violent manner to any incident nor use any form of profane, vulgar, obscene or abusive language or gestures, whether it is directed at an official, opponent, playing colleague, team official, tournament official, Bowen Island Slo-pitch League personnel or spectator. Neither will they tolerate profane, vulgar, obscene or abusive language or gestures from any supporters and other members of their team.
  • Use intimidating or threatening behavior towards officials, opponents, playing colleagues, team officials, tournament personnel, Bowen Island Slo-pitch League personnel, or spectators nor will they permit any others to openly or maliciously criticize, badger, harass, or threaten an official, opponent, playing colleague, tournament personnel, Bowen Island Slo-pitch League personnel or spectator.
  • Make objectionable demonstrations by throwing bats, gloves or other equipment in a forceful manner.
  • Discuss publicly with participants and spectators in a derogatory or abusive manner any decision by the officials or any opinions of players.
  • Cause the destruction of property belonging to others.
  • Leave recyclables or trash in the dugouts or on or around the playing field.
  • Use any intoxicating substances during the course of the game, or appear to be in an intoxicated condition while participating in a game.
  • Use glass beverage containers in the dugouts or on or around the playing field.
  • Harass, heckle, insult, jeer, or use verbal tactics to embarrass or insult a Bowen Island Slo-pitch League representative, employee or other participant at the site before, during or after a game.
  • Make derogatory, disdainful, disparaging comments or remarks regarding any person or program connected to Bowen Island Slo-pitch League on any public forum, message board or bulletin board.
  • Use any improper and unapproved equipment.
  • Give false or misleading information or fail to cooperate with a legitimate request from a Bowen Island Slo-pitch League official in the discharge of his/her official duties.
  • When requested by the game official, will refuse to assist him/her in the enforcement of this Conduct of Members and the control of players making threats.
  • Engage in a continuous verbal attack upon an official or other participant or spectator after they have been ejected from a game or make a verbal threat of physical violence upon an official.

Members who fail to adhere to the points of conduct outlined above may have penalties and or suspensions rendered against them up to and including expulsion from the Bowen Island Slo Pitch League membership.

Covid 19 Rules and Procedures

These measures are being adopted to help organize a season that will allow ALL participants to enjoy the game at their level of comfort. It is imperative that all participants conduct themselves in a respectful and sportsmanlike manner. Teams and or players who do not adhere to the requirements put forth by the league, risk being refused to participate. 

Required 

Do not come to the game if you are ill, show any symptoms or have been around someone who is ill

COVID Health Screening: On game day and for every game, each player will be required to complete a COVID-19 Health Screening form. TeamSnap has a built-in screening questionnaire that makes it very easy to track who is at the game and who has filled out the questionnaire. This is required by our insurance and the Province.  If Teamsnap isn’t used, a team list with the questions can be used and must be kept on file.

Arrival/Departure at the Fields

  • Arrive 15 minutes maximum before scheduled game time
  • Warm up will need to be distanced and it is encouraged to warm up solo where possible. Members of a household can warm up together.
  • Leave facilities immediately upon game completion

Social Distancing During the Game

  • Other than regular game play, there will be no contact, “no handshakes or high fiving”.
  • A verbal exchange of line up can happen as long as social distancing is used.
  • During batting, players will need to line up along the fence outside of the diamond spread out accordingly
  • The dugout will only be used by the “on deck” batter, and the next batter in the line up after, (“in the hole” batter)
  • Coaches will stand 2 meters away from 1st and 3rd base at all times.
  • The catcher will stand 2 meters behind the strike mat
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing
  • No spitting
  • A dedicated area will represent where the next scheduled team is to meet, until such time when they have been cleared to approach the diamond by the umpire or when it is apparent that the previous team occupants have vacated the facility
  • Immediately upon the completion of the game, all members will leave the diamond area
  • Spectators must sit socially distanced from team members and other spectators
  • It is recommended that spectators be kept to a minimum
  • It is recommended that children should not be left unattended while playing
  • No coaching conferences or group huddles
  • All garbage must be collected and removed by each team after the game

Recommended

  • The use of mask or face shield
  • The use of a personal batting helmet.
  • The use of personal fitted batting gloves at all times 
  • The use of individual antibacterial hand sanitizer
  • It is recommended that each team use their own set of balls, minimizing the number of people who touch the ball by half. 
  • Balls should be wiped before each inning
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Wash your hands often

Umpires

  • It is recommended that umpires wear a mask or face shield
  • Umpires will stand where they are comfortable calling the game, and at least 2 meters away from the catcher and batter.
  • Umpire conferences are to be kept to a minimum adhering to distancing requirements
